Ronald Koeman has given Barcelona his blessing to seek a deal for Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, according to reports.
Having won the Premier League last season, Liverpool are unlikely to let many of their key players go. But they face a difficult situation with Wijnaldum.
The Dutch midfielder is in the last year of his contract, which means it could go for free next summer. To avoid that, Liverpool must extend their contract or sell it.
The recent turmoil in Barcelona could have an impact on Wijnaldum’s future. Ronald Koeman is Camp Nou’s new coach, and having worked with Wijnaldum internationally, could look to snatch him from the Anfield club.
According to Sports worldKoeman has given Barcelona the green light to try to sign Wijnaldum.
The Catalan newspaper (via Sports witness) states that Koeman “endorses” Wijnaldum for two main reasons. First of all, he is seen as a complete midfielder, who could fill various roles for the team.
Koeman appreciates the pace of work at Wijnaldum, which he saw the benefits of firsthand when working with a 29-year-old with Holland.
Second, the fact that they already have a strong working relationship would help Wijnaldum’s potential transition to Camp Nou. There, he would also meet his international teammate Frenkie De Jong, with whom he has experience playing together.
However, Barcelona must first make some sales before they can think about signings.
KLOPP RESPONDS TO THE SPECULATION OF WIJNALDUM
Asked for a comment on the Wijnaldum situation ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal at the Community Shield, Jurgen Klopp told a press conference that he would not be talking about the current scenario.
Klopp responded: “It’s an open contract situation, obviously. Otherwise, you would know.
“And that means we don’t talk about it. I never did it at press conferences, so why should I change that? “
