Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that contacts between him and Sir Alex Ferguson will now be kept to a minimum, and apologized to him for texting him in the early hours of the morning.

Ferguson sent a congratulatory message to the German when the The Reds’ 30-year wait for the league title ended in June after Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea.

By the time the celebrations at the team’s hotel had subsided and Klopp had returned to his room, it was only a couple of hours before dawn and the Liverpool boss did not anticipate that the 78-year-old Scotsman would still have his phone by his bed when sent his reply.

“The problem was, I came back to my room late that night and couldn’t sleep right away, so I checked the messages I received and one of them was from Alex Ferguson,” he said.

“I think I just responded in a very polite way. It was around 3.30 am-4am and I didn’t expect him to have his phone next to his bed. I didn’t want to wake him up. If that happened, sorry Alex!

“But since then we have not been in contact. He’s still the former Manchester United manager and I don’t think he wants to tell me too much about Liverpool’s success.

“He respects it, but it’s not what he likes to watch the most on television!”

Klopp tells Leeds what to expect

Liverpool begin their title defense at home against newcomers Leeds, themselves back in the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

Despite having fulfilled the desire for a long-awaited title, Klopp does not intend to let his players take their eyes off the ball for the new season.

“I know that Marcelo (Bielsa) said that Anfield is not Anfield without supporters and he is right, in a sense, but it is still Anfield, by the way. It is our home and we are Liverpool ”, he added.

“That shouldn’t sound like a threat, but they didn’t play us very often before and it should feel different to them too.

“We are willing to work hard and make life more uncomfortable for them than any team last year could against them. If we don’t we will suffer.

“It’s the first game of the season and it seems like it’s a great advantage for Leeds because they waited so long for the Premier League.

“Now everything is new and they are fighting for everything and we are champions, leaning back (gesturing to take a puff on a cigar) and we all watch what Leeds are doing.

“We weren’t doing this and as long as I breathe we won’t be like that. It must be the most intense match Leeds has ever had, otherwise we will have more problems than I would like ”.
