SINGAPORE: Kamala Harris’s election victory in the United States is a “historic moment for female minorities in the United States and around the world,” Singapore President Halimah Yacob said on Sunday (November 8).

Joe Biden was declared president-elect by all the major television networks on Sunday morning (Singapore time), after obtaining more than 270 electoral votes.

“I am also especially encouraged by the election of Ms. Harris as the first female, black and South Asian Vice President of the United States,” Madam Halimah said in a Facebook post congratulating Biden and Harris.

Harris has shown that one should never be “constrained by glass ceilings,” the president said.

“Throughout her long and distinguished career in public office, she was not afraid to break down barriers, achieving many ‘firsts’ along the way. This latest appointment culminates a high point for her.

“Yet she is humble and often attributes her success to the hard work of those who came before her,” said Mdm Halimah, adding that Ms. Harris “continues to be an inspiration to many young women around the world.”

Calling Biden a “good friend of Singapore,” he said Singapore and the United States share a “strong, multifaceted and enduring partnership” in defense and security, economic and people-to-people ties.

“I look forward to working with President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris in the coming years to take our bilateral relationship even further,” said Mdm Halimah.
