Jürgen Klopp insists Liverpool never look beyond the next game when it comes to competing for the Premier League title.
The Reds hold a four-point lead at the top in the final round of top flight matches, in which the champions host West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, having clinched a 7-0 win at Crystal Palace in their previous departure.
Klopp’s men, of course, have been involved in title runs in each of the last two seasons, following their second place in 2018-19 by leading the division with 99 points last season.
The manager was asked during his media teasers for the West Brom clash if those experiences could give Liverpool an advantage in the title battle this time around.
“Honestly, we don’t think of challenging [for] the title at the time; honestly not at all, ”Klopp replied.
“I know it’s a bit boring, but it’s the truth because we don’t understand it any other way. We’re just trying to make sure we’re as competitive as possible in the next game.
“So you win a game, which is great, the best feeling you can have. Then he usually comes back to play a few days later. This time we didn’t have that, that’s true. The first time. Now we try to really use that to prepare for the next games, probably not for the rest of the season but for the next games.
“I don’t know anything about advantages or disadvantages in this situation and this kind of thing. If you are a complete surprise and you are in April at the top of the league, everyone would say: ‘Okay, with a little more experience now you could make it to the end’. Even then it’s the end of April or March, so we’re not that far off now.
“If we are still in this position in March or April, maybe we can talk in another way. But if we’re only two or three points ahead, it doesn’t make sense anyway.
“The only advantage you can get is the advantage on the field in the specific game. Nothing else. Being successful in the past can have different kinds of influence: have you had enough? Do you want more? This kind of things.
“My boys probably didn’t have enough yet and want, sure, more, but that doesn’t make it any more likely. It just means we have created one base so far and we have to create a lot more to use in the end. And so far, nothing really happened in this league. “
