Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool expects change in Premier League rules

Jurgen Klopp says that the well-being of footballers should be considered when the Premier League meets to discuss the continuation of the five substitutes rule.

And the Liverpool manager has revealed that he is in favor of teams being able to make further changes when the campaign begins on 12 September.

Following the resumption of football at the end of June, the clubs agreed to make two additional changes per game, with a bench of nine instead of the seven before the half-time was imposed in mid-March.

The topic will return to the agenda when the clubs meet to vote at a shareholders meeting on September 3.

Klopp says that given the truncated schedule for the 2020/21 campaign, teams should be able to continue making five changes during games.

The Liverpool manager has constantly pushed for a reform of the soccer world calendar and feels that the managers should be allowed additional substitutes as the upcoming season has been condensed.

“Am I in favor? Yes,” Klopp said after his Liverpool side were beaten on penalties by Arsenal at the Community Shield.

“I know that the discussions will resume if it is an advantage for the bigger clubs, but I do not speak from that point of view.

“I do not want to have [that type of] an advantage. We have 38 Premier League games in a four week shorter season, that says it all.

“And all the other competitions will be pretty much the same that I know of. So these things would help.

“But it’s never about having an advantage. I saw it in the last nine games of last season, it was ‘oh well, you can change five players, not bad!’

“But it’s about how we can get through this season and not about who gets small advantages here and there.

“It really is how we can get through this season for the sake of soccer players and their performance levels, I think it makes sense, but I don’t make the decisions.”
