Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has revealed that Virgil van Dijk has “radiated positivity” since sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Van Dijk is ready for a long stint on the sidelines and could miss the rest of the season after sustaining the injury following a challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford last weekend.

The absence of the center-back for an extended period is certainly a major blow for Liverpool, but Henderson revealed that van Dijk sent an “optimistic and inspiring” message to the team.

Henderson told Liverpool’s program of the day: “It is his presence and personality that will leave a gap in the days and in training. As important as the fans think it is, for us as teammates it is even more so.

“It was typical of Virgilio that, after digesting the news, one of the first messages he sent to us, to all of us, was optimistic and inspiring. The exact content, of course, will remain private, but there was not a word there that made him feel sorry for himself. It was about looking ahead and making sure it came back better and stronger. ”

Henderson added that van Dijk “radiated positivity” when he returned to the club’s Melwood training ground.

He said: ‘Likewise, when he came to Melwood on Tuesday, he just radiated positivity. That’s the great man. And it’s up to us to take their lead and just think about the positive impact that we can all have from now on. ”

Henderson has full faith that Liverpool’s remaining central defense options, including Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho, will be able to impress while van Dijk is out.

He said: ‘I look at the players that we have who can play that position and I wouldn’t trade them for anyone else. Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho are players of international quality who have produced for us as a team time and time again.

Liverpool beat Ajax 1-0 in their first assignment since van Dijk’s injury.

They return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home game against Sheffield United.
