TOKYO: A Japanese woman who said she hid her mother’s body in a freezer in her apartment for a decade told police she feared eviction if death was discovered, media reported on Saturday (January 30).

Police told AFP that Yumi Yoshino, 48, was detained “on suspicion of abandoning and concealing a female body” found in a freezer in a Tokyo apartment on Wednesday.

Yoshino said that after finding his mother dead 10 years ago, he hid the body because he “did not want to move” from the house they shared, local media reported, citing unidentified law enforcement sources.

The mother, who is believed to be in her 60s at the time of her death, was named in the rental of the apartment in a municipal housing complex, Kyodo News said.

Yoshino was forced to leave the apartment in mid-January after failing to pay his rent, according to reports, and a cleaner discovered the body in a freezer hidden in a closet.

An autopsy was unable to determine the time and cause of the woman’s death, while there were no visible wounds on the frozen body, according to reports.

The body had been folded to fit in the freezer, police told Jiji Press.

Yoshino was arrested at a hotel in Chiba city, near Tokyo, on Friday.
