SINGAPORE – A woman who sneezed at a security guard at ION Orchard after she was denied entry because she was not wearing a mask was jailed for 11 weeks on Thursday (September 10).

Sun Szu-Yen, 46, was not eligible for a Mandatory Treatment Order (MTO), Daily Service Order (DRO), and Community Service Order (CSO) after her evaluations. A psychiatrist discovered that he did not suffer from any mental disorder.

Sun, a Taiwanese woman in Singapore with a long-term pass, had pleaded guilty in May to the charges, but qualified the statement as saying that she had sneezed due to the bad smell. Then her plea was put aside.

Sun again pleaded guilty to the same charges: a count of causing an alarm to security guard Devika Rani Muthu Krishnan on April 12, and a count of throwing items out of the window of his condo unit on June 4 of last year.

On April 12 of this year, five days after the breaker period went into effect, Sun approached the entrance to level five of ION Orchard with her son, intending to enter. They both wore no masks.

From that day on, all people visiting shopping malls were required to wear masks or were denied entry as part of measures to combat the spread of COVID-19.

After Sun entered his personal and contact details on the form and had his temperature taken, he was reminded to wear a mask before entering the mall. However, Sun only used his scarf to wrap his mouth. When Devika refused his entry, Sun pulled out another scarf and indicated that she wanted to use it as a mask.

When still denied entry, Sun deliberately sneezed in Devika’s direction and said, “Do you understand? You get it! “Then he took his passport out of his bag and said,” I am China, I am Taiwan. ”

Devika asked Sun to leave, and the latter took the form in an attempt to cancel her data. When Devika tried to stop her, Sun told her to “shut up” and “do your job”. Sun and her son left. The exchange was captured on CCTV.

Separately, Sun threw a model globe, a green plastic chair, a vacuum cleaner, a glass bottle, some pencils and a white plastic garbage can from the window of his condo unit on June 4 of last year. She did it out of frustration and stress. A condo security guard heard the loud bang and his colleague told him that someone on the third level had thrown objects.

The colleague asked Sun to calm down, but she refused. Then the security guard called the police.

Although District Judge Seah Chi-Ling requested a report from the MTO, DRO and CSO for Sun, the woman was deemed unfit for all three community-based sentencing options citing a lack of family support for Sun.

According to an MTO, an offender will receive treatment for his mental condition instead of going to jail. In the case of an OSC, the offender will provide supervised community services for a period of time, and while under a DRO, the offender will have to report to a day reporting center.

A community service order officer told the court that Sun “was not forthcoming” and was reluctant to share information when asked during an interview on July 8. He exhibited the same behavior when asked through a follow-up call on July 14, and was “evasive and reluctant to give information when asked.”

In response, Sun said that the interview was conducted via video call and was unclear due to the spotty internet connection.

She said she had nothing to add when asked.
