SINGAPORE – The driver of a private rental car was disregarded while driving on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) in 2017, resulting in an accident in which four motorcyclists and one passenger suffered serious injuries, including fractures.
On Monday (November 30), 47-year-old Tan Tien Hong was sentenced to four weeks in jail after pleading guilty to causing serious harm to the five friends for negligent driving.
The Singaporean was also disqualified from driving all types of vehicles for three years.
The court heard that one of the motorcyclists, 25-year-old Mr. Mohammad Zulkheir Misnan, suffered multiple fractures, an almost complete amputation of his fourth toe on his right foot and a subdural hemorrhage, a type of bleeding that occurs outside the brain.
Another motorcyclist, Muhammad Zulhusni Sanusi, 27, suffered a fractured left ankle and a head injury with retrograde amnesia.
People with retrograde amnesia tend to have a hard time remembering past events.
Two other men suffered fractures, while a fifth man had a bruised abdominal wall and arm wounds.
Tan was driving down the AYE towards Tuas shortly before the accident around 7.40pm on April 6, 2017, when a car in front of him stopped.
He was unable to stop in time and, to avoid a collision, he veered from the first lane to the second without properly checking if it was safe to do so.
His car got in Mr. Zulhusni’s way, causing the man’s motorcycle to hit the rear bumper of the vehicle.
Mr. Zulhusni was thrown off his motorcycle, the court heard.
A second motorcyclist failed to apply the brakes in time and crashed into Tan’s car.
The other nearby motorcyclists also lost control of their vehicles, which skidded.
Tan alerted the police to the incident and the five victims were rushed to the National University Hospital.
Tan’s bail was set at $ 8,000 on Monday and he was ordered to turn himself in to state courts on January 4 of next year to begin serving his sentence.
For causing serious injury from negligent driving, a criminal can be jailed for up to two years and fined up to $ 5,000.
