SINGAPORE – A former national soccer player was sentenced Friday (Nov. 13) to 18 weeks in jail and a $ 1,000 fine for crimes including sexually abusing his date’s friend on Tinder.
The incident happened after Mohammad Imran Sahib Mohamed Ibrahim Sahib met a woman on the online dating platform and they went dancing together in 2018 with one of his friends.
After the evening, the married man decided to take the two women home in his car. But after leaving his date, he sexually abused the victim when they were alone.
The victim and her friend cannot be named due to a gag order.
Last month, District Judge Kan Shuk Weng convicted the 38-year-old Singaporean after a trial on two counts of sexual abuse and one count of using criminal force against the victim.
On Friday, Judge Kan said one of the acts of sexual abuse took place while the car was in motion, reducing the chances of the victim escaping.
He noted that the father of three is a first-time offender and had contributed to the Singapore sports scene when he was a national soccer player.
In her presentations during the trial, Assistant District Attorney Chee Ee Ling said that when Imran and the two women left a club called Beacon on Raffles Boulevard around 6 a.m. on March 4, 2018, their date threw up.
While her friend took care of her, Imran grabbed the victim and kissed her on the lips.
But she still got in her car, as she didn’t want to leave her friend alone with him.
After their date left the car at their destination, Imran told the victim to sit in the front passenger seat. He abused her again while they were traveling down 6 Ang Mo Kio Avenue.
The victim got out of the car “in a frenzy” when Imran pulled up by the road to relieve himself.
DPP Chee said the “terrified” victim “walked barefoot to (her friend’s apartment block) for approximately 1½ km. In the victim’s haste, she left her high heels in the defendant’s car.”
He reached the empty deck at 7.17am and waited until 8am before taking a taxi home.
Although she told her sister about her ordeal, she waited 16 days to make a police report.
DPP Chee said that he was initially afraid of Imran.
The court heard that since the incident, the victim “had nightmares of people raping her and once dreamed of committing suicide.”
“To this day, it is clear that the victim is still traumatized by her ordeal as she appeared visibly upset and collapsed four times while testifying in court,” the DPP added.
Imran, who was represented by attorney Revi Shanker, denied sexually abusing the woman. He claimed that he had used amphetamines and was acting “strangely”, yelling at strangers as the night wore on.
He said he intends to appeal against his conviction and sentence. His bond was set at $ 15,000 on Friday.
For each count of sexual abuse, an offender can be jailed for up to two years and fined or punished.
