The recent Apple event did not surprise many with the display of new iPads and Apple Watches, although you will have to wait a bit longer for the iPhone 12, but one thing that I was One surprise is the sudden release of revamped operating systems for Apple devices.

Usually the latest iOS drops at the same time as the latest iPhone. This year (and how strange it has been so far), they are releasing iOS 14 earlier, and along with it comes the new iPadOS 14 and WatchOS 7. They didn’t miss the AirPods Pro and Apple TV update while at that, either.

It’s a lot to take in at the moment, but all you need to know is that the new software should make your life in the walled garden that is Apple’s ecosystem that much easier to navigate in these tough times.

Here’s how you can get your Apple gadgets up to speed and get started with new features in the store.

iPhone – iOS 14

Before you do anything, take a couple of minutes to clean up your phone: delete apps you haven’t touched for months, and delete photos, screenshots, videos, and other files that just take up space. We suggest that you backup your iPhone too when you are done.

Head to Settings> General> Software Update> Download and Install. It will take a while because iOS 14 is robust to download wirelessly. Make sure you have enough battery in the iPhone or leave it plugged in just in case.

Main features

alt

Widgets: Spice up your home screen now that widgets, which used to be on the left side of the first page, can be placed directly on your screen. There are also several sizes to choose from, so you can view even more information (such as weather forecasts, calendar appointments, and reminders) without having to go into the app. Long press an empty spot on the home screen to enter jiggly mode and hit the plus sign at the top left. There you can choose which widgets you want and how detailed you want the information to be displayed.

Application library: Now you don’t have to put every app you download across multiple home screen pages and folders. The app library looks a lot like the app drawer on Android phones, but it’s on the far right of the screen. It’s just a long page of apps that have been automatically organized by category so everything is organized without you having to touch anything. Applications that are used infrequently can even be removed from the home screen and instead remain in the application library. Less clutter on your home screen pages is always a good thing.

Touch Back: More of a hidden enhancement than a standout feature, you can now double or triple tap the back of iPhone to perform custom tasks. First, you need to turn it on via Settings> Accessibility> Tap> Back Tap. There, you can choose multiple tasks to activate, so you can have the iPhone take a screenshot or show notifications if you tap the back.

iPad – iPadOS 14

The same advice applies: perform some basic cleaning tasks and remove junk from your iPad before updating the operating system. Make a backup to iCloud or on your Mac or PC.

To make the leap to iPadOS, go to Settings> General> Software Update> Install Now. Keep the device plugged in just in case and it should be ready in about 15 minutes, depending on your internet connection.

In terms of features, you’ll get pretty much the same set of new capabilities (like widgets, app library, etc.) as iOS 14 on the iPhone. There are some that are specific, or at least more useful, for the Apple tablet.

Main features

alt

Writing: Do you have an Apple Pencil? Now you can use it to type in any text field (like search bars) and it will convert your handwriting to text. Your sloppy handwriting can even be copied as text and pasted into another app, so hasty notes can be digitized as readable words and sentences.

Pattern recognition: Ideal for illustrators and cartoonists. Drawing things like lines, curves, circles, squares, triangles and other shapes will be recognized and the iPad will turn your rough designs into perfect outlines.

Picture in Picture: IPads are great for watching video content, and now you don’t have to hit pause when you need to switch to another app. Picture-in-Picture mode will create a resizable floating screen on your home screen or in any other application for content to play while you take notes or clear your email inbox, for example.

Apple Watch – WatchOS 7

Updating the software is easier in this case. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch> General> Software Update. Download the update and enter the passcode on the watch if prompted.

Main features

Automatic hand washing detection: Clean hands are more important than ever these days, and the watch can tell when you’re washing them. Upon detection (through motion and sound), it will start a 20-second countdown so you don’t miss a place. If you wanted, you could even let the watch remind you to wash your hands once you get home.

Custom watch faces: New watch faces are always welcome (Chronograph Pro is especially great), but now Apple Watch owners and app developers can create and share their own watch faces with custom designs and complicated designs.

Sleep tracking: Finally, Apple’s dream follow-up. The new Sleep app will automatically help you monitor the length and quality of your sleep, as well as relax you for bed when it’s time to go to bed. Keep the watch on and it will dim the watch face while you sleep and gently wake you up. up with little touches on your wrist.
