While Bukit Batok SMC Member of Parliament (MP) Murali Pillai was enjoying his breakfast with his fellow PAP on Sunday (March 28), he was informed that an elderly man had lost consciousness in the same cafeteria and immediately reached out to help. to the man. .

Murali, who wrote this incident in a Facebook post, said the incident occurred at a coffee shop located at Block 155 Bukit Batok Street 11, and that he was there for breakfast during his Sunday morning walk with his team.

In the post, the MP explained that a coffeeshop assistant (named Mdm Tan) was quick to inform him that an elderly man passed out and fell to the ground, breaking the glass he was holding.

Hearing this, Mr. Murali, along with his branch teammate Jason, rushed to help the old man, who finally regained consciousness.

Comrade Jason and I ran to the old man. I was unconscious. We tried to wake him up and luckily he recovered, ”he said.

The MP then proceeded to call 995 for help and the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) staff instructed him to turn the older man to one side to prevent him from drowning and to verify the rise and fall of his belly. .

He was also asked to speak with the old man continuously to ensure that he remained conscious.

About 10 minutes later, SCDF agents arrived at the scene. A GP also came to rescue the elderly man with a defibrillator.

“Dr. Ho, our GP, also came with a defibrillator. I was so touched that upon hearing an older person faint, Dr. Ho ran out of his clinic with his nurse to help, ”Murali said.

The SCDF officers then took the elderly man to the hospital for proper medical care.

Urge the public to embrace CPR skills

In the post, Murali also said that his cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills have not been validated and reminded residents of the importance of learning these life-saving skills.

He added that he was “lucky that the elderly man became conscious on his own” as Mr. Murali was not prepared to perform CPR on the elderly man.

“I did an after-action review myself. My CPR skills haven’t been validated in a while. We were lucky that the old man quickly became conscious and was breathing. If not, CPR may need to be applied. This is where I would not have been so prepared for an emergency, ”he said.

As such, he noted that Bukit Batok Community Participation and Emergency Committees (C2E) deliver first aid and CPR courses for Bukit Batok residents, urging residents to sign up so that they are more prepared to face similar situations. .

He also noted that he plans to personally enroll to revalidate his CPR skills as soon as possible.

This is not the first time such an event has occurred. In 2015, then-Popular Action Party (PAP) candidate Koh Poh Koon performed CPR on a man in his 70s after the latter collapsed at the Ang Mo Kio Central Market and Food Center.

Dr. Koh, who is a colorectal surgeon, performed CPR on the man before the ambulance arrived. Unfortunately, the elderly man passed away while receiving treatment at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

Dr. Koh is currently the country’s Minister of State for Health and a deputy for Tampines GRC.

Netizens do not believe that the incident was pure coincidence

Hearing Murali’s account, netizens were quick to point out that they felt the entire incident was too convenient to be a coincidence.

Writing their thoughts on the Mothership Facebook page, they said that it is quite strange that Mr. Murali was in the coffeeshop at the perfect time, and that the coffeeshop assistant approached him to inform him about the old man who passed out instead of calling it. The ambulance.

Calling it “wayang”, online users said the whole incident was a “good show”, with some wondering if it was a cover-up to shift the focus on other accusations against the MP that so far has not responded. .

In fact, several online users alleged that the old man was an actor who simply pretended to pass out so that Murali could come to his rescue and be considered a hero.

Some expressed that it is not normal for a photographer to be on the scene to take a picture of the MP helping the senior, emphasizing that this is definitely an “act of publicity”.
