‘I was trying to push him’

Arsenal’s Thomas Partey suffered a recurrence of a thigh injury in their 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, coach Mikel Arteta said.

The Ghana international, who moved to Arsenal from Atlético de Madrid for € 50 million over the summer, injured his thigh last month and only returned to the side on Sunday.

Partey woke up injured shortly before halftime and was standing on the touchline when the Spurs came out of their own box. Arteta then urged him to try again to stop the counterattack, but the midfielder was only able to run a few meters before stopping.

Before Partey, Spurs forward Harry Kane finished off Spurs’ sweeping attack, handing the Premier League leaders their two-goal cushion.

“I was trying to pressure him, but I don’t think he realized how serious the situation was when he left his post, but it was probably because he was in a lot of pain,” Arteta told reporters.

“All of a sudden they come to attack us and Thomas is walking towards me and I was trying to push him. I haven’t talked to him so I don’t know exactly how it happened or if he felt something really serious.”

Partey’s absence will be a cause for concern for Arteta amid a busy schedule in which Arsenal, 15th in the league, play eight games in 23 days.
