‘I heard loud explosions’

A car caught fire along Jalan Kembangan on Friday (October 9).

Stomper Owen He was walking towards the Kembangan MRT station when he saw thick black smoke nearby.

The photos he took show a thick plume of smoke from the car and Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) personnel at the scene.

A photo of the car engulfed in flames has also been circulating online.

“I was on my way to the Kembangan MRT station when I saw black smoke in the sky,” Owen said.

“I ran to the scene and saw a car completely engulfed in flames. I also noticed that there was no driver in the car.

“There was a sudden explosion sound as SCDF personnel ran towards the car to fight the fire. As they put out the fire, another loud explosion sound was heard.

“Soon after, a fire truck, an SCDF motorcycle and a police car arrived at the scene to control the crowd.

“Thanks to the swift and decisive efforts of SCDF staff and the police, the fire was extinguished in about ten minutes.

“I also saw that SCDF staff continued to spray water on the car to prevent another fire.”

In response to a query from Stomp, SCDF said they were alerted to the fire at 3.45 p.m.

“The fire involved a car and SCDF extinguished the fire using a hose reel and two compressed air foam backpacks,” said an SCDF spokesperson.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
