What’s new: Global smartphone shipments fell 11.7% in the first quarter, according to industry data tracking firm IDC.
Among the top five brands in the world, the top three of Samsung, Huawei and Apple recorded a sales drop of 18.9%, 17.1% and 0.4%, respectively.
Player number 4 Xiaomi and number 5 Vivo achieved gains of 6.1% and 7%, respectively.
What is the background?
The global smartphone market suffered a crisis in the first quarter as the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and led many consumers to stay indoors and out of stores to avoid infection.
The blow has been particularly painful for China, as three of the top five brands are Chinese, collectively representing 37.5% of global shipments.
Among Chinese brands, Huawei’s global share dropped more than one percentage point to 17.8%, as it faced the additional challenge of being excluded from many of its U.S. suppliers under Washington’s national security-related sanctions.
