A hallmark of the original 1997 release, Final Fantasy 7 Remake reinvents the Airbuster fight in Chapter 7, serving a tense duel between man and machine.
Given the long preamble of the battle and the relative difficulty, we thought it would be best to guide you through the process and show you how to defeat the Airbuster if you find yourself battling its flurry of charged attacks. Here we show you how to beat the Airbuster in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
How to weaken Airbuster in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Before the confrontation with Airbuster, you will be led through a series of rooms filled to the brim with Shinra’s troops. Once you remove them, you’ll notice a set of terminals that you can use to remove parts of the Airbuster’s mechanical makeup that weaken the boss before battle. Be sure to really study every room, as there are often optional key cards ready for you instead of just mission critical ones.
Once you find them, you will have to choose which part of the Airbuster you would like to remove. Big Buster shells essentially limit the number of devastating rocket attacks you can muster, and Goro-M limits the items you can use in battle. Personally, we discovered that getting rid of the Airbuster’s AI cores to slow it down was the most effective way to beat it, as, despite his stature, the boss moves fast and wants to stay on top at all times.

Once you have weakened the boss enough, prepare your characters with Lightning Materia and then the battle begins. Airbuster is weak for this Matter, but don’t risk just having it equipped in the cloud. If each character has a Lightning attack, they can chain them in tandem and completely immobilize the Airbuster. If you picked up the Elemental Support Matter in the previous chapter, consider pairing it with a Lightning Matter to deal “weakness” damage with each sword cut.
As with every boss battle in the game, make sure no character wastes his ATB; keep changing characters to use skills as soon as you get a chance. Tifa is fantastic here, so don’t forget her. His Chakra ability is a great way to regain health without using resources, and he can quickly stagger the Airbuster by combining his basic attacks with his Rampant Force ability to increase his staggering abilities.
When backing into the center lane, watch out for its charged laser attack and lightning storms as you duck out of your line of sight. Crucially, when the Airbuster summons two hands and sends them to each end of the bridge, it splits the party and attacks first to cripple it.
At some point he’ll enter a new phase and walk away from the squad, so make sure you have Barrett in full health so he can deal damage while Cloud and Tifa are defenseless. Use this time to spam the healing elements while attacking from afar with your Gatling weapon.
