Fans of Hong Kong’s Mak’s Noodle restaurant wonton mee will be saddened to learn that the restaurant is closing its flagship store at The Centrepoint. Its last trading day is February 28 next year and it is also the brand’s last point of sale in Singapore.

In a statement on his Instagram account, the restaurant said it will close because “they cannot reach an agreement for the renewal of the lease with the management of the shopping center.”

However, it doesn’t necessarily mark the end of the brand’s presence in Singapore. In the same post, they mentioned that “if there was an opportunity and a suitable location,” they would reopen again in Singapore.

In a separate Instagram post, they mentioned that they had faced challenges maintaining the authentic flavor of the brand’s signature noodles and “sourcing and importing ingredients from Hong Kong.” The high cost of food was another problem they faced.

Mak’s Noodle is known for serving its wonton noodles in small bowls to prevent the noodles from getting soggy. They also use the exact same recipe from almost 100 years ago to make their noodles.

While the Michelin-starred restaurant is rated “Hong Kong’s Best Wonton Noodle,” it actually originated in Guangzhou, China. During World War II, founder Mak Woon Chi moved to Hong Kong and eventually opened his first post in Central. He was succeeded by his son, Mak An, who went on to make the brand a household name in Hong Kong.

Mak’s Noodle opened its first Singapore restaurant in 2015 at The Centrepoint and then opened stores in VivoCity and Westgate. Since then, both points of sale have closed on May 24, 2017 and February 17, 2017, respectively.
