Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson believes Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood will learn from his recent offenses, but admits he has little sympathy for the teenager.
the 18 years, who enjoyed an excellent campaign at Old Trafford last season, has made headlines this month, but not for exploits on the field.
Greenwood, along with Phil Foden of Man City, was Sent home from England on duty for violating Covid-19 rules in early September Before last week, “historical images” emerged of the forward inhaling laughing gas.
It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Red Devils attacker, but he hopes to put that behind him when United begin their Premier League stint with a home game against Palace on Saturday.
Former England boss Hodgson said: “I’m afraid that when you make mistakes that are as big as the one Mason Greenwood made, you should be expected to pay some kind of price for that.
“I’m not sure sympathy is the right word. It is important that you learn from the mistake, I’m sure you will, but mistakes of that magnitude will unfortunately be criticized, scrutinized and, I suppose, will be punished.
“I’m lucky it didn’t happen on my shift, it was someone else’s problem!
“I’m not ready to stand here and say sympathy. I’m not even really ready to talk about age too.
“The fact is, if you are old enough to get in and hold a regular position at Manchester United, and old enough to be called up and play for England, then I’m afraid you have to produce that level of behavior that is required in those cases. “
Hodgson’s comments come later United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer criticized England’s decision call Greenwood so soon after his debut season at Old Trafford.
Greenwood started for Solskjaer’s men when they won 2-0 at Palace in last season’s finale.
It was a victory that helped United finish third, but South Londoners have fond memories of their last trip to Old Trafford, a surprising 2-1 victory last August.
United has the best quality
Hodgson added: “They have brought in players of the quality of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba is back. I don’t know how fit he is, but he certainly came back in full force at the end of the season in the final period. -emergency closure.
“They just bought a top-notch player at (Donny) Van De Beek, so we really are up against a stronger team now, at least on paper, than a year ago and that’s a compliment if you like the job Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his staff have done it. “
Palace is still without multiple players for Saturday’s game, and summer signing Nathan Ferguson has yet to make his debut since joining a free transfer from West Brom.
A knee injury halted his progress at Selhurst Park, but Hodgson insisted the full-back was “making excellent progress” and reflected on the club’s transfer activity.
Ebere Eze and Michy Batshuayi have joined Palace’s options and yet they are still looking for another forward.
“To get the quality of player that I think we would need, funds would be needed and if those funds would be available without someone being sold, I don’t know at this point,” Hodgson admitted.
“We have had targets through the window. We got two of them, Nathan, I don’t really count because we basically signed it in January.
“The other two are the ones that we have followed and loved and we still have players that we have been following and would like to pursue. I will have to wait and see if the club has the funds available to bring those players, if we can persuade them to come. “
