SINGAPORE – Heavy rains in parts of Singapore triggered possible flash flood warnings in five locations on Friday afternoon (January 1).

The national water agency PUB said in a Facebook post around 12.55pm that the public should avoid Jalan Seaview and Mountbatten Road for the next hour, as the water levels in drains and canals in these areas had reached 90 percent.

In an update just before 2pm, PUB added Siang Kuang Avenue and Langsat Road / Lorong 105 Changi, as well as Block 409 West Coast Road to the list of locations.

On Thursday, the Singapore Meteorological Service (MSS) said Singapore is ready for a cool and windy start to the year, with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.

At 1pm on Friday, the temperature dropped to 22 degrees C in Admiralty.

Moderate thunderstorm rains are forecast in the afternoons most days for the next two weeks, the MSS said.

Intense and widespread thunderstorms are also expected within a few days.

Overall, rainfall in the first half of January is expected to be above average for most of the island.
