Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has bragged about the fact that his team has a better conceded defensive record than Monday’s opponents Liverpool.

The Saints have conceded 19 goals in the Premier League, one less than Jurgen Kloppon the side after 16 games.

In fact, the central pairing of Jannick Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek has been excellent. The defense has kept a clean sheet in the previous two games.

In their last five games, meanwhile, the south coast club have only conceded two goals.

Speaking before the meeting with the RedsHasenhuttl said that a strong defense is an indicator of a strong season.

“We have to find a good balance to keep the ball and continue creating opportunities, and I think this is a good challenge for the next matches,” said the coach.

“But the most important thing for me is that so far we have conceded 19 goals this season, one less than Liverpool, and this is the biggest step.

“This is what was definitely necessary and this was the fundamental thing to have a good season.”

But as Hasenhuttl pointed out, your team must find the middle ground between attack and defense.

While they have a strong track record behind them, they have only scored one goal in their last four games.

Meanwhile, Hasenhuttl could return to the bench for Monday’s clash. He spent the previous match against West Ham in self-isolation after a member of his family tested positive for Covid-19.

Hasenhuttl points to a ‘different’ experience

“It’s definitely different if you’re not on the bench, but a good team doesn’t need a manager all the time, and now we have a good team.” the austrian said.

“It is definitely a team that knows what to do, it is more important to take advantage of the time before the game to prepare them perfectly and we definitely did a good job in the last 48 hours, and this was the reason why they were well organized.”

Forward Danny Ings could play his former club after returning from injury to play the full 90 minutes against the Hammers.

“He has enough time to recover now for the next game against his former club Liverpool,” Hasenhuttl said.

“I’m happy to have him back, and we should definitely have more strength up front to score goals in the future, but this will happen, I’m sure.”
