ACCRA, Ghana: A worker at a fish processing factory in the Atlantic coastal town of Ghana, Ghana, infected another 533 workers at the facility with the coronavirus, President Nana Akufo-Addo said in a transmission Sunday. (May 10).
Ghana’s health authorities reported the outbreak at industrial facilities on Friday night, but did not provide details.

“All 533 people were infected by one person,” said Akufo-Addo. He did not provide details on how the disease spread on the premises or whether security measures had been implemented.
He said the 533 positive cases, accounting for about 11.3 percent of Ghana’s total infections, were part of a backlog of roughly 921 cases dating back to April 26 and only recently reported.

The new cases brought Ghana’s total since the pandemic was first reported in the West African nation in mid-March to 4,700 as of Sunday night, the highest number of infections in West Africa.

The president said 22 people died of coronavirus-related causes, while 494 recovered.
With 160,501 tests since the outbreak, Akufo-Addo said Ghana had conducted more tests per million people than any other country in Africa.

“Implementing our aggressive screening, testing and treatment strategy is our surest way to eradicate the virus,” said Akufo-Addo.
He announced an extension of the ban on public meetings until the end of May, and schools and universities will remain closed.
Akufo-Addo eased a three-week blockade in Ghana’s two main cities, Accra and Kumasi, on April 19 amid concerns over a prolonged blockade in the economy.
