SINGAPORE – On Monday (November 16) the High Court allowed the identity of a man to be publicly revealed who was jailed for six years in July for killing his two-year-old daughter.

According to the local newspaper The times of the strait, the gag orders imposed on the identities of Johnboy John Teo, now 36, and his daughter Ashley Clare Teo had been wrongly imposed by a magistrate.

The prosecution reportedly requested the removal of the gag order, stating that justice must be ensured and that there was no public interest in suppressing the identity of the victim.

Teo was charged on June 18 of last year with murder. At that time, her name and Ashley’s were published by the local media.

In June of this year, the charge was reduced to wrongful death. Later, a magistrate allowed a prosecutor’s request that both names be muzzled.

About the case

Teo and his wife began the divorce proceedings in November 2018. On June 12 of last year, a provisional sentence was granted and the divorce was finalized four months later, after four years of marriage.

At the time of the offense, he suffered from a major depressive disorder.

The couple lived separately with Teo visiting their son on alternate weekends. It was supposed to happen with him from June 15 to 16 of last year.

After bringing Ashley in from a parent-teacher meeting at her preschool on June 15, Teo saw another man who she believed to be her wife’s boyfriend waiting for her by a car.

Then Tim spent the weekend with his daughter and wondered about the man he saw. He reflected on his lack of visiting privileges and custody of his daughter, and was concerned about losing her.

On June 16, feeling shaken, Tim grabbed two knives from the kitchen, sat next to Ashley, who was sleeping on the bed at the time, and cut his neck.

Teo placed a pillow over Ashley’s face and suffocated her. Then he stabbed himself twice in the neck.

Teo’s wife visited his apartment after he failed to show up with Ashley at 9pm. Since he was not responding to phone calls, he called the police.

A locksmith then opened the door. Police officers found Ashley lying motionless on the bed and Teo unconscious in a pool of blood.

In addition to depression, Teo was also found to be suffering from a delusional disorder in late 2017.

In sentencing him, then-Judicial Commissioner Dedar Singh Gill pointed out that there was no planning or premeditation involved in Teo’s crime. “The mind of the accused will be imprisoned for the rest of his life with the knowledge that he was responsible for the death of his daughter,” said the judge.
