SINGAPORE – In a week-long bombing, 157 people were arrested for various crimes, from illegal gambling to e-commerce crimes.

The multi-agency crime operation carried out on August 23-30 led to the arrest of some of the 128 men and 29 women detained. The suspects are between 16 and 81 years old.

The operation covered various locations in Jurong West, Tuas, Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang and Bukit Batok, and was led by the Jurong Police Division.

It was supported by officials from the Central Narcotics Office, the Land Transportation Authority, and the Immigration and Control Points Authority.

In addition to those arrested, 310 people were also controlled by the Singapore Police during the crackdown.

The Straits Times was present at a police raid on illegal horse gambling that took place at a Jurong West cafe on August 23 at around 2.30pm.

In the cafeteria, 13 men and a woman between the ages of 53 and 72 were arrested, and the police seized $ 4,421.

ST noted that the illegal activity took place in broad daylight and in full view of other cafeteria customers and vendors.

At the scene, police seized bags of evidence, including what appeared to be numbered betting slips, newspapers containing horse racing details, and large piles of cash.

Assistant Police Commissioner Devrajan Bala, commander of the Jurong Police Division, said: “This joint operation led by the Jurong Police Division is an ongoing enforcement effort to suppress criminal activities.”

“The police will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to take tough enforcement action against those who are involved in criminal activity.”

Authorities gave a breakdown of the detainees and the crimes involved.

In separate arrests, 21 men and six women between the ages of 18 and 81 were detained in connection with public games, vice-related activities, alleged members of secret societies, as well as traffic and vehicle offenses.

Meanwhile, 28 men and a woman between the ages of 49 and 79 were recruited for illegal gambling activities and are currently being investigated for crimes under the Gambling Act. More than $ 8,000 of cash and gambling paraphernalia were seized.

Another 53 men and 14 women, between the ages of 16 and 70, are under investigation for assisting in loan robbery activities and loan scams.

During the operation, 19 men and seven women, ages 17 to 63, were arrested for e-commerce scams and offenses related to commercial crimes.

Preliminary investigations by authorities revealed that they were allegedly involved in 39 reported cases across the island involving more than $ 592,000.

Separately, seven men and one woman between the ages of 24 and 55 were detained by the police for alleged drug and customs-related offenses.

The police seized 45 pills, suspected of being controlled drugs, as well as 10 boxes and 24 cartridges of various brands of cigarettes without paying taxes.

Investigations against all suspects are ongoing.
