Liverpool are reportedly facing a battle to retain the services of Mohamed Salah after Ronald Koeman made the Egyptian his number one target in Barcelona.
The road from Anfield to Camp Nou has been a familiar road to many stars in recent years. Luis Suárez, Javier Mascherano and Philippe Coutinho have left for Barcelona during the last decade.
Koeman has also been on the trail of Gini Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman has entered the final year of his contract with Anfield, but there has yet to be a development on his future.
As it stands, the midfielder will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January. Indeed, Barcelona coach Koeman is a great admirer of the Reds star.
However, there is relief for Liverpool fans. Jurgen Klopp’s intervention seems to have done the trick and Wijnaldum now seems ready to stay..
Before Koeman’s arrival, the Barcelona board has also been interested in a move for Sadio Mane.
The Senegal leader has impressed for the past three seasons and caught the attention of the money men of Barcelona.
However, it looks like it’s not Mane at the top of Koeman’s wish list, but rather Salah.
With Lionel Messi threatening to leave Barça – a threat that has since been denied – Koeman asked them to sign Salah as a possible successor.
And even with Messi staying, Koeman is still willing to take him to Catalonia.
That’s according to Sjaak Swart, a former Dutch international who holds the record for Ajax appearances.
You have told the website voetbalzone.nl: “I know Koeman wants it, and I know Salah would like to go.”
When pressured to reveal the source of his information, Swart added: “I can’t.
“I’m not going to go into more details, but believe me I know.”
However, awarding Anfield’s Salah will not be an easy task.
Liverpool can effectively name its price for the player should he press to leave, but even that scenario seems unlikely.
