SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party (WP) Member of Parliament Raeesah Khan said on Thursday (September 17) that it is vital to frame difficult conversations in a “considerate and responsible way,” after police warned her about some of his comments on social networks. media.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Ms. Khan said her intention was “never to cause unrest or social divisions” and apologized for saying things “in a way that may have caused harm to certain communities.”
Police said on Thursday they had issued a “severe warning” to Ms Khan for the crime of “promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion or race”, in connection with comments she made on social media in 2018 and in May of this year. .
The warning was also issued for “an additional offense of contempt by scandalizing the court.”
In her Facebook post, Ms Khan said that she was informed at the police station that she had received a “severe warning” and that a decision had been made not to press charges against her in court.

She said she had spent most of her adult and youth life advocating, campaigning and organizing for minority causes, such as working with families torn apart by incarceration, people with disabilities and women who have suffered sexual assault.
“In my passion, I have said things in a way that may have caused harm to certain communities. I apologize for this. I will continue to learn and hope to contribute to positive change in Singapore.”
Ms. Khan also referenced her time as a deputy, saying that she and her team are working hard to connect with Sengkang residents and provide assistance to those in need of help.
“The conversations I have had have been moving, insightful and have allowed me to understand how each of us has an important role to play in creating a Singapore that is equitable, just and compassionate,” said Ms. Khan.

“From these interactions, I also learned that, as a leader, I have the power to initiate difficult conversations and that it is vital to frame these conversations in a thoughtful and responsible manner. Ms. Khan thanked those who gave her understanding and support, adding that she would pay for it and continue to use her voice in Parliament to “speak frankly and responsibly on important issues.”
Two complaints were filed against Ms Khan on July 4 and 5 in connection with her comments on social media.
Ms. Khan had said on July 5 that she regretted making “insensitive” comments and apologized to those who may have been hurt by them.
