SINGAPORE – A 13-year-old high school student suffered a cut to his nose that required stitches after his fencing coach threw his mobile phone at him and hit him in the face.

The court heard that at that time, the independent trainer Chan Shihan was angry at the boy for not listening to his instructions.

He then threw the device in his direction, hoping it would hit a nearby fencing mask.

The phone missed its target and hit the boy.

Details about the young man and his school cannot be disclosed due to his age.

Chan was fined $ 2,000 on Thursday (September 10) after pleading guilty to a charge of causing harm by committing a reckless act.

The 27-year-old Singaporean, who worked for Blade Club Singapore, was at the boy’s school to teach a fencing class on February 20 last year.

The class stopped for a short break around 5pm.

Chan was asking the students to gather about 20 minutes later for the next part of their lesson when he noticed the boy was sitting up.

Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Kee said: “At the time, the victim was tired and was not heeding the defendant’s instructions.

“The defendant called the victim and asked him to get up, but he refused to do so, while beating his mask, which was on the ground, with his fencing sword.”

Annoyed, Chan threw her cell phone in the boy’s direction and hit him in the face, injuring his nose.

He rushed to administer first aid to stop the bleeding and told the teacher in charge of fencing what had happened.

The child was taken to KK Children’s and Women’s Hospital, where the wound was stitched up.

Chan, who accompanied him there, later apologized to his mother.

DPP Kee said the boy’s mother alerted police to the incident the next day.

On Thursday, the court heard that Blade Club Singapore has settled his medical bill of around $ 130.

For causing harm by committing a reckless act, a criminal can be imprisoned for up to one year and fined up to $ 5,000.
