SINGAPORE – Six people were rescued from a fire that engulfed a room on Saturday morning (December 19) at the Waterwoods condominium in Punggol.

The fire broke out in a two-story unit on the 16th floor of Block 19 Punggol Field Walk.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the incident around 11:25 a.m. M. The fire involved the contents of a bedroom.

Upon arrival, SCDF firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced their way into the smoke-filled unit.

Three of the occupants were rescued from a ledge outside the upstairs bathroom, while one person was found in the kitchen. The remaining two people were rescued from a bedroom on the top floor of the unit that was directly above the fire.

Firefighters quickly led the occupants to safety through the bathroom window.

They also extinguished the flames with a jet of water.

SCDF said that five of the six occupants were taken to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for smoke inhalation, and one person refused to go to the hospital.

A spokesperson added that patients who suffer smoke inhalation or severe burns but are in stable condition are usually taken to the Specialized SGH Burn Center rather than the nearest hospital, which in Punggol’s case was Sengkang General Hospital. .

Some 100 residents of the affected block were also evacuated by security agents as a precautionary measure.

SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire.
