EA has outlined the next-gen updates for FIFA 21 on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and it’s fair to say that the PlayStation version has the upper hand.
The football sim is set to take full advantage of the PS5’s fabulous DualSense controller and it bothers me that I get stuck playing FIFA 21 on Xbox Series X for that.
In a post on the official PlayStation blog, EA revealed that the DualSense’s haptic feedback will respond to what happens in the field. Whether you’re making one last block to stop the opposition’s scoring or hitting the wood after a 30-yard effort, these moments will feel right in the palm of your hand thanks to new controller vibration technology.
Interestingly, you will be able to know with which foot your player has hit the ball on PS5. That means if you feel any vibration to the right of the controller when shooting like Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe, the ball is sure to shoot into the stands as he only has one foot – his left. The DualSense will help serve as a constant reminder, then, that paying £ 72 million for a player with one foot was a catastrophic mistake by Arsenal. (Rant about.)
Adaptive triggers are also used in FIFA 21 to great effect, increasing stamina as the player’s stamina is depleted. Pressing the R2 button while adaptive triggers battle you off sounds like a subtle yet immersive touch, and one I’d love to experience firsthand.
Finally, there are the PS5 Activity Cards, which will allow you to jump to your favorite mode in seconds. If you fancy jumping straight into career mode or online seasons without selecting your language for the millionth time (seriously, EA, can we fix this?), You can.
Of course, if these features sound more of a hindrance, EA has assured gamers that they can disable them if, for whatever reason, they hate fun.
Own goal
As someone who bought the Xbox Series X version, these unique features make me envy the PlayStation version. I grabbed FIFA 21 before the PS5 came out, and it was mostly influenced by the fact that most of my friends play on Xbox.
But still, the PS5 exclusive features may seem like small touches, even insignificant, but the DualSense controller has already proven that it can have a transformative effect when gaming, and I’m hungry for more. Who cares if I don’t have friends to play with.
In comparison, the Xbox Series X controller only supports traditional noise and has the standard analog triggers that we are all used to. It means that developers cannot control the intensity or location of the pad rumble, or change the resistance of the triggers. Maybe I’ll buy FIFA again if any Black Friday sale comes up for PS5 …
The next-gen FIFA 21 update arrives December 4 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. However, FIFA 21 on PC will not receive any updates, as EA has said that its minimum specification for the game would change, blocking “a lot of people in the cold can’t play the game”.
