REUTERS: Facebook Inc is planning to launch a mobile gaming app on Monday focused primarily on live game streaming in an attempt to acquire the Twitch services from Amazon.com Inc, Google YouTube and Microsoft Corp Mixer, reported Sunday on New York Times.

Originally, Facebook Gaming was slated to launch in June, but the company advanced its plans as the coronavirus quarantine keeps people at home, according to the report.

“Investing in games in general has become a priority for us because we see games as a form of entertainment that really connects people,” the newspaper quoted Fidji Simo, head of the gaming application, as saying.

“It is entertainment that is not just a form of passive consumption, but entertainment that is interactive and brings people together,” said Simo.

The new app also includes casual gaming and access to gaming communities, according to the NYT.

The iOS versions of the app will be released with Apple approval, he added.

Facebook did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
