FA investigates Cavani’s post with Manchester United striker facing suspension if guilty

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani will face a three-game suspension from the Football Association if convicted of using racist or discriminatory language on social media.

The FA is investigating the UruguayanThe Instagram post, which he sent after Sunday’s comeback win over Southampton.

Uruguayan international Cavani used the phrase “gracias n ******” to thank a supporter who praised his two-goal loot. The 33-year-old later deleted the comment, but could still face action.

In fact, the FA will not automatically resign from its investigation even though Cavani has withdrawn from office.

Bernardo Silva of Manchester City was suspended for a match, despite the fact that he later deleted a post that compared his teammate Benjamin Mendy to the cartoon figure of a Spanish chocolate brand.

The FA’s investigation will relate to Rule E3, which covers posts about a person’s ethnicity, color, race, or national origin.

If the agency considers that any activity on social media is related to such an issue, that will count as an aggravating factor in the investigation.

The rules also make it clear that social media account owners are solely responsible for all posted content. This includes posts from themselves or a third party.

The word Cavani used was the same as his partner from Uruguay Luis Suarez used against Patrice Evra in 2011. The then Liverpool forward claimed the word was used in a friendly, non-racial way.

However, the FA dismissed his claims and sanctioned Suárez for eight games.

The ban Cavani could face comes after the FA changed its stance on racist language and behavior on social media. Violators now face a minimum three-game absence.

If the FA continues with the case, it will ask Cavani for his written observations. What’s more, if striker Cavani is found, the FA will have to impose a charge no later than next Monday.
