SINGAPORE – The trip between Expo and Geylang Bahru stations on the Downtown line will take travelers an additional 20 minutes due to a signaling failure on the MRT line.
Rail operator SBS Transit announced the flaw on its Twitter page on Monday night (December 28) at around 6:50 p.m. It said then that passengers may experience a 15-minute delay on their journey.
In an update at 8:20 PM, the operator said the additional travel time has increased to about 20 minutes.
He also apologized for the inconvenience.
There are another 10 MRT stations located between Expo and Geylang Bahru.
Several travelers complained about the glitch on social media around 6.30pm on Monday. Some also questioned SBS’s claim of a 15-minute delay, saying its trains were stuck at each affected station for about 10 minutes.
Long lines were also observed at the MacPherson MRT station.
Signaling systems are used to direct rail traffic and ensure a safe distance between trains.
The failure along the Downtown line on Monday is the second major signaling failure along an MRT line this month.
On December 4, train services along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) were interrupted for five hours due to a software failure in the network component of the signaling system.
The TEL failure caused a six-month delay in opening the second stage of the line to facilitate “a more complete overhaul” of the rail system software, the Land Transportation Authority said on December 14.
