A late penalty ensured Newcastle claimed a point against a dominant Tottenham with their only shot on goal.

Spurs returned to domestic service after their exploits in the Europa League qualifying rounds in the middle of the week, which had seen them beat Shkenidja to reach the play-off round.

Opponents Newcastle entered the game after their biggest away win in history, beating Morecambe 7-0 in the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies faced their match this time, as the Spurs produced a dominant display. But a late penalty due to a hand made it all square.

After a barrage of opportunities early on, Lucas Moura gave Tottenham the lead by scoring in the 25th minute. Harry Kane primed the Brazilian star with another assist to give him a touch.

By this time, Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow had already been busy, preventing a couple of times on Kane’s own, as well as a free kick from Giovani Lo Celso.

Darlow denied Kane again just after Moura’s goal, before the England captain set up Son Heung-Min, only to see the South Korean hit the post.

Son was again frustrated by the posts when his left foot hit the crossbar on the Spurs’ last big chance in the first half.

DARLOW STAYS ALERT IN THE SECOND HALF BEFORE THE DRAMATIC EQUALIZER

Tottenham started the second half in the same way, with Darlow having to stop another effort from Moura after Lo Celso’s corner.

Then Lo Celso had an effort that was saved, having shot the ball directly at the Newcastle goalkeeper.

There were more chances for backups Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela with a volley and a free kick respectively, but Darlow equalized both.

There was a nervous moment for the Spurs at the end, when Ben Davies crashed the ball into teammate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in his own box. The ball only dribbled back for a corner, from which the referee rejected Newcastle’s appeals for a hand penalty.

And in injury time, the VAR analyzed another possible penalty for the visiting side when the ball hit Eric Dier’s arm. The referee gave it and Callum Wilson shot home even though Hugo Lloris dived the right way.

An irate José Mourinho walked straight through the tunnel before the game was over.

The Spurs finished the game with 12 shots on goal, while Newcastle had only one. However, it was enough for them to earn a share of the loot.
