SINGAPORE – Dogs kept on the grounds of the Sembawang Wealth God Temple are not chained and may roam the temple at night, the temple administration said in a Facebook post on Saturday (September 19).
The post came after the corpses of three dogs were found after officials from the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) put out a large fire at the temple on Friday night.
“We would like to clarify some misinformation that has been circulating regarding dogs in our temple,” the temple administration said, adding that it has seven stray dogs in its care.
“Unfortunately, we have lost three of them because they were trapped in the second level when the fire broke out. The remaining four managed to escape and are safe. “
The temple administration noted that this information “was not originally released” as it was still awaiting confirmation from the SCDF. She also shared photos of four dogs, although she did not specify if these were the surviving animals.
In the aftermath of the fire, the Chained Dogs Awareness advocacy group in Singapore posted on Facebook that it knew that three dogs at the temple had been confined to “decent-sized” enclosures.
The group expressed its devastation over the death of the dogs and called on authorities to prevent temples, workshops and factories from confining the dogs in cages and tethered to stationary objects.
Some 60 firefighters and 11 emergency vehicles were deployed to fight Friday’s blaze, which also prompted the evacuation of a nearby nursing home. No one was injured in the incident, although a resident of the home was taken to a hospital after experiencing shortness of breath.
