Diogo Jota reflected on a “really special” return to Molineux and wished his former teammate Rui Patricio the best after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Portugal forward scored the only goal of Monday’s game with a clinical finish in first-half injury time after intense interaction that also involved Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

However, his immediate thoughts after the game were with Patricio, after the Wolves goalkeeper required prolonged treatment in the later stages of the game due to a head injury.

Jota told Sky Sports: “I think life is more important. I hope it is nothing too serious and I obviously wish him a speedy recovery. “

In the deft move that led to his winning goal …

Yes, I think that against these types of teams, they defend well. [so] we need to take advantage of when they are unbalanced and they were in the moment. The quick triangulation from I think Sadio to Mo and back again and then me to the left was a good move, a good goal and helped the team to a victory we had long sought in the Premier League.

I think we have to improve a lot, especially in this competition, and I hope this is a great start to the race until the end of the season.

On Wolves pressure and if a second goal would have helped Liverpool …

It’s a difficult game, we knew it, and obviously they make it very difficult for us throughout the game. I think we had a couple of chances in the first half. Not so much in the second half, apart from the disallowed goal and Mo at the end. But of course we knew it would be difficult and we are very happy with the victory.

On whether the Reds have found their shape after back-to-back victories …

We hope so. Of course we work for that and now with two clean sheets [and] two wins is very good and now we have the rest for the international teams but it is football.

On the importance of closing the gap with the top four …

Massive. Like I said, we needed to win. That was the most important thing and adding points because we have been fighting in the Premier League and we want to change that.

On how special an evening was for him personally …

Special. He had been here for more than three years, working every day with almost everyone in that dressing room. Obviously it was special, I just wish the fans had been here too, but still a good result for us and me.
