SINGAPORE: Singapore’s street vendor centers and markets will see safe management measures adjusted in Phase 3 of Singapore’s reopening.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Monday (December 28) that seating markings have been revised in the dining areas of street vendor centers to accommodate the increase in group sizes of up to eight people.
In addition, more markets will see access control and temporary fences removed.

SEAT BRANDS REVISED
Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, NEA, NEA-designated operators, and city councils have delineated seating and tables in hawker centers’ dining rooms in accordance with safe distancing guidelines.
With Phase 3, the markings on the seats and tables in the dining areas of the hawker centers have been revised to accommodate the increased size of the dining groups from five to eight people.
In general, tables with eight seats or less will no longer have seat markings.
Tables with more than eight seats will still have some seating marked to ensure that dining groups remain limited to eight people and that there is a safe distance of one meter between groups.
“Additionally, when adjacent table seats (for example, one after another) are separated by less than 1 meter, some seats may also be marked to maintain a safe distance between dining groups at different tables,” NEA said.
Safe distancing ambassadors will continue to be deployed at street vendor centers to ensure compliance with safe management measures.
“In addition to complying with safe handling measures, customers should also continue to dispose of their trash, such as used disposables, tissues and wipes, and return dishes and trays to designated collection points,” NEA said.
“This will help keep the dining room environment clean at our hawker centers and reduce the risk of disease transmission to other customers, cleaners and hawkers.”
RESTRICTIONS TO BE REMOVED IN 7 MARKETS
Access control and temporary fences were implemented starting in April in 40 crowded markets to prevent customers from entering once the number of customers in each market reached the allowed capacity.
Since then, NEA has phased out the makeshift fences in a total of 20 markets in two separate reviews in June and November.
Starting January 4, 2021, temporary fences and controls will be removed in seven more markets. Are:

– Block 4A Eunos Crescent

“While occasional queues have been observed in these markets, they have been relatively short and manageable,” NEA said.
Thirteen markets will continue to have access control and temporary fences. Are:

“We continue to see relatively long queues in these markets and will continue to monitor the situation on the ground,” NEA said.
“NEA seeks to ensure that members of the public and merchants understand that a calibrated approach is necessary to achieve a balance between resuming business in markets and safeguarding the safety and well-being of all customers and merchants.”
There are currently 81 markets managed by NEA and operators designated by NEA.
