Covid-19 case discovered in Tuas bedroom, more than 300 foreign workers in quarantine, Singapore news

SINGAPORE – A total of 342 migrant workers will serve a 14-day quarantine after a Covid-19 patient was detected in the Tuas bedroom where they were staying.

All of them were transferred from the Space @ Tuas dormitory to a government quarantine facility after the confirmed case of Covid-19 was detected on Monday (September 28), the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Thursday.

The MOM added that the new case was discovered through routine tests included in the ministry’s list.

As a precautionary measure, a stay-at-home notice was issued to all workers within two blocks at Space @ Tuas.

MOM said that this precautionary measure had been introduced after its preliminary assessment of the situation to prevent further potential spread of the Covid-19 infection.

Initially, physical segregation measures aimed at preventing workers from the two blocks from mixing appeared to have been violated.

But after further investigation, it was established that workers from different blocs were unlikely to mix.

Therefore, stay-at-home notices for the unaffected block were overridden.

However, as safe living measures were not strictly enforced in the block where the confirmed Covid-19 patient stayed, 342 residents there, working for 27 employers, had to be quarantined.

MOM reminded all dormitory operators, employers and workers to work together to adhere to strict dormitory safety measures.

Doing so would ensure that only affected workers who are at the same level or section should be quarantined rather than all dormitory residents within the block, the ministry added.

“It is only with the collective efforts of all parties that our migrant workers can remain safe and healthy and our businesses face minimal disruption to their operations,” said MOM.
