SINGAPORE – ComfortDelGro taxi drivers no longer carry out delivery work after the operator canceled the service.

He had introduced it in April during the breaker period, and the drivers were making food deliveries initially.

The service was later expanded to cover drugs in June.

ComfortDelGro Group Corporate Communications Director Tammy Tan told The Straits Times on Friday (December 18) that it stopped service on November 30 as demand for regular taxi jobs increased after the second phase of the Singapore reopening.

“Alternative delivery jobs, which included food and grocery deliveries, were necessary during the breaker period to shore up the driver’s income at a time when demand fell to almost zero,” he added.

“In total, we worked with about 1,200 food partners and had more than 2,100 taxis logging about 85,000 food delivery trips.”

He said his company was grateful for partner support in helping taxi drivers “get through those tough times.”

Previously, there were restrictions on the use of taxis and private rental cars for deliveries, due to concerns that it would affect traditional passenger service and contribute to traffic jams.

But the restrictions were temporarily lifted in March to address a shortage of delivery spaces amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The Land Transportation Authority later announced in September that the temporary easing of restrictions will continue until the end of September next year.
