A Chinese national on death row who was detained at Tangerang Penitentiary in Banten reportedly escaped the facility through a tunnel he had dug.

Tangerang Prison Director Jumadi confirmed the escape, explaining that the Chinese national, Cai Ji Fan, left the penitentiary on Monday around 2:30 am through a sewer connected to the tunnel he had dug.

“We have been searching since the day he escaped. We believe he dug a tunnel [on the prison grounds] he goes through one of the prison walls and escapes, “he told tempo.co on Friday.

The convict, who also goes by the name Cai Changpan, was found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to death in 2017. He had been transferred to the penitentiary from Pemuda prison in Tangerang.

The warden said that the General Directorate of Corrections of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights took over the case and opened an investigation.

“The General Directorate of Corrections, the General Inspectorate and the ministry’s regional office in Banten are investigating the case,” said Directorate General spokeswoman Rika Aprianti.
