BEIJING (BLOOMBERG, REUTERS) – Shulan, a Chinese city in the north-eastern Jilin province bordering North Korea, was ordered to partially shut down some facilities after an increase in the number of coronavirus cases.

Jilin has ordered strict restrictions in the city of Shulan, closed all but the most essential services, and asked residents to stay in their homes, the province said in a statement on its website. The city on Sunday (May 10) raised its virus threat alert level to medium high risk, the province said.

There were 11 new cases of coronavirus in Shulan on Saturday, local health authorities said Sunday. The city is investigating the source of the infection after a police employee contracted Covid-19, the South China Morning Post said in a separate report on Saturday.

On Sunday, China reported an increase in new and asymptomatic cases.

There were 14 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, including Shulan’s, the largest daily increase this month for the nation, according to Bloomberg calculations based on official data.

As of Saturday, Jilin Province reported a total of 105 locally transmitted and 19 imported Covid-19 cases.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country reached 82,901 as of May 9, while the total number of deaths from the virus was 4,633, he said.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday that Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his willingness to support North Korea in fighting the epidemic in response to a verbal message from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korean state media reported Sunday that their leader Kim received a message from Xi Jinping, pledging cooperation to “fight the pandemic.”

North Korea has so far claimed that it does not have coronavirus infections in the country, but reported that more than 5,400 people were released from quarantine as of March.
