SINGAPORE – Chinatown Point buyers and tenants were evacuated on Friday morning (March 12) after a fire broke out.

The fire is believed to have started inside Luxury City, a luxury handbags and accessories retailer located on the first floor of the mall. The store signage appeared to be damaged.

Ms. Sharon Guan, 39, who works at the Samsung store two units away, said the fire started around 10:15 a.m. M.

“At about 10.25 am, there was smoke everywhere on the first floor, and security told us to get off the premises,” he said.

“We didn’t notice the fire, but we saw it from the outside.”

Video of the incident showed a raging fire at the store. Large cracks were visible in the glass windows.

Around noon, the tenants of the mall were told to gather at the entrance for a briefing, but were not allowed to return to their units.

At least three fire trucks from the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) were seen at the scene.

SCDF said that around 100 shoppers and store operators had been evacuated from the mall, while one person was taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

ST understands that Luxury City merchants are on site and helping the authorities.
