SHENZHEN, China: Chinese President Xi Jinping will deliver a speech in Shenzhen on Wednesday (October 14) to mark the anniversary of the establishment of China’s first special economic zone in the southern city 40 years ago, the agency reported Monday. state news Xinhua.

Neighboring Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam later said she would postpone her annual political speech scheduled for Wednesday and travel to Shenzhen, though she said a meeting with Xi was not scheduled.

Lam said he would go to Beijing at the end of this month and that he was aiming to hold his political speech in late November.

On Sunday, the central government announced measures to give Shenzhen greater control over land use, with the aim of encouraging foreign investment in the tech sector, while cutting red tape in energy and telecommunications.

One of the testing grounds for the reforms that fueled China’s accelerated growth over the past four decades, the Chinese Communist Party touts Shenzhen as a glowing symbol of China’s rise as a world economic power.

Xinhua did not elaborate on Xi’s speech, but it is likely referring to further integration of the Greater Bay Area, a region that includes Hong Kong, Macao and nine cities in China’s Guangdong province, including Shenzhen.
