China finds coronavirus in frozen meat, Latin American and New Zealand packaging

BEIJING: The Chinese city of Jinan said over the weekend that it had found coronavirus in beef and tripe and their packaging from Brazil, Bolivia and New Zealand, while two other provincial capitals detected it in pork packaging from Argentina. .

China is increasing testing on frozen foods after repeatedly detecting the virus in imported products, prompting the halt of import bans, even as the World Health Organization says the risk of contracting COVID-19 from frozen foods It is low.

In Jinan, capital of east China’s Shandong province, the goods involved were imported by a unit of Guotai International Group and Shanghai Zhongli Development Trade, the city’s municipal health commission said late Saturday.

Cases of frozen pork meat were reported in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province, central China, and Xian, capital of Shaanxi. It was not immediately clear if the two cases were related.

The samples that tested positive in Zhengzhou came from a 24-ton batch of frozen pork shipped from a storage facility in Qingdao, Shandong, authorities said.

China, the world’s top beef buyer, found the coronavirus last week on packaging for Argentine beef in Shandong and Jiangsu, and on packaging for Brazilian beef in Wuhan.

Separately, the city of Baotou in China’s Inner Mongolia region said it had disinfected some products and vehicles at a company after a case of asymptomatic coronavirus in the northern city of Tianjin came into contact with a batch of meat from frozen pork from France.

It was unclear whether authorities suspected the person had infected the meat or the other way around. Nucleic acid tests on 115 people came back negative, authorities said
