Moments of negligence on the road can often contribute to accidents, whether the driver or pedestrian is at fault.
In a video clip shared by the Facebook group SG Road Vigilante on August 27, a white Mazda was seen knocking over a woman and a student while backing into a parking lot outside the Bukit Timah Food Center.
According to images taken by another vehicle’s dash cam, the vehicle was backing into a parking lot at a slow but steady pace. Behind his butt was a woman and a child who appeared to be heading to the food center.
But something caught the attention of the woman and child as they looked to their left as they walked forward as the car continued to back up.
Then the vehicle collided with the woman and child. The impact caused the pair to fall backwards onto a vehicle parked behind them and subsequently fell to the ground.
They managed to get to their feet pretty quickly, with the woman slapping and hitting the car with her umbrella in anger.
For a brief moment, the woman tried to confront the driver of the vehicle. Soon after, the couple were seen walking towards the food center showing no signs of injury.
According to the Facebook post, the driver did not get out of his vehicle to check if the woman and child were injured in the incident. He also noted that the vehicle had so much sunshade that it could have affected the driver’s ability to check blind spots.
Netizens ask for more ‘situational awareness’
After viewing the clip, multiple Facebook users commented on the post, stating that the driver should not be blamed in this situation and that the pedestrian pair should have avoided walking behind a reversing car.
People carriers and SUVs have more blind spots, which makes it even more difficult to detect pedestrians, ”said a Facebook user.
Other netizens said that if it had been a heavy vehicle hitting the pedestrians, they would be seriously injured or even killed.
Many netizens emphasized the importance of pedestrians being “situational awareness”, especially in a parking lot when there may be unexpected movement of vehicles.
They should be aware of their surroundings and not assume that drivers can see them or pass them on the road.
Meanwhile, others said the driver should have at least checked the woman and child after the incident.
While it is unclear who is at fault, the incident is a reminder for everyone to be vigilant and always on the lookout when on the road and even in parking lots.
