Now that 5G is becoming commonplace thanks to the new iPhone 12 lineup, the possibility of a huge technological leap is just around the corner.
However, 5G connectivity cannot bring back dead family members. Although maybe 6G.
In any case, the internet is laughing at a Facebook post shared last Thursday (Oct 29), featuring a Singtel ad in the Bugis MRT underpass. The telecommunications company wanted to illustrate the potential capabilities of the 5G network: wireless internet connectivity that is strong, stable, and fast enough to allow a family to show their newborn son to grandmother through the transmission of holograms.
Very sci-fi, sure, but not entirely impossible judging by the potential to create accurate 3D holograms via 5G-enabled video capture technology.
However, Facebook user Darsh Daimontal took a different view of the ad images and joked that it appears that the 5G connection managed to revive a deceased grandmother.

To be fair, that little device that shoots the hologram looks like a ghost trap temporarily secures spirits in Ghostbusters. The visual lack of legs on the poster did not serve to invalidate the spectral representation.
Singtel’s commercial video on 5G should be able to clear things up. The ad imagines a future where dear Ah Ma, who is relaxing on an empty terrace somewhere, can easily be summoned to the bedside of a hospital via a holographic call.
People know, of course. But the hilarity of the ad and the accompanying caption on Facebook is still pretty clear, judging by the 5,400 shares and counting, the post garnered.
AsiaOne has reached out to Singtel for comment.
