What was supposed to be a quick errand turned into a close shave for a mother after a fire broke out while one of her daughters was home alone.

The fire occurred in Block 154 Toa Payoh Lorong 2 at 3.25pm yesterday (September 1), the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) confirmed.

The 56-year-old father, who was not identified, told Lianhe Wanbao that his wife had been cooking fried chicken while their eldest daughter was eating.

While cooking, she realized she had forgotten to buy something, she said.

Then she ran downstairs with her youngest daughter to run her errand.

“She said she came back upstairs in 10 minutes and she didn’t expect to see the kitchen on fire. It terrified her.”

The girl cried and screamed for help at the front door of the house, several neighbors said.

When they saw smoke coming from the unit, they alerted the SCDF.

Fortunately, the girl’s mother arrived in time to open the door to the apartment and rescue her.

The oldest daughter is about six or seven years old, while the youngest daughter appears to be about two or three, neighbors told the Chinese Evening newspaper.

The fire involved the contents of the kitchen and was extinguished with a foam backpack of compressed air, SCDF said.

No injuries were reported and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.
