SINGAPORE – A British man who escaped from a hotel room where he was serving his Notice to Stay at Home (SHN) twice last September to meet his then-fiancée was jailed on Friday (February 26) for two weeks and fined. with $ 1,000.

Nigel Skea, 52, pleaded guilty last week to one count each for failing to wear a mask outside his residence and for exposing others to the risk of infection by leaving his isolation room.

His partner, Agatha Maghesh Eyamalai, 39, who had booked a room at the same hotel, was also imprisoned for a week on Friday.

The Singaporean pleaded guilty last week to inciting Skea to violate his SHN.

Skea failed to visit Agatha on her first try. On his second attempt, the same day, he managed to spend the night with the 39-year-old Singaporean woman, but then found himself locked on the floor where her room was.

The couple got married on November 14 of last year.

Couple planned illicit reunion

Skea, a Scottish-based Maritime Craft tug master, booked a flight from London to Singapore to visit Agatha and arrived here on September 20 last year.

They gave him a 14-day SHN and told him that he could not leave his hotel room or receive visitors. They took him to the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, where they gave him a room on the 14th floor.

Skea then texted Agatha and the duo agreed to meet, and Agatha booked a room on the 27th floor of the hotel.

At approximately 12.50am on September 21, Skea left her room without wearing a mask to find a viable route to get to Agatha’s room.

He made his way to the emergency staircase and realized that the access was one-way and could only be opened from the side.

Shea then returned to her room and found the door closed. He called the front desk for help and the hotel staff opened the door for him.

At approximately 2.20 a.m. M., He ventured out again, this time blocking the door to the room with a piece of cardboard so that it was left ajar.

He climbed the emergency stairs to the 27th floor, where Agatha opened the emergency exit door for him. The couple then spent the night together in their room.

When Skea tried to return to his room at 11.13 a.m., he was unable to access his apartment from the emergency staircase. As he continued down the stairs, a security officer stopped him.

Skea lied saying that the door to his room had closed behind him as he tried to pick up the food that was left outside.

Later, the hotel service manager escorted Skea back to her room and saw the door still ajar.

CCTV footage had also captured the movements of the culprit in the hotel.

In mitigation, the couple’s attorney, SS Dhillon, said that Skea had traveled to Singapore to propose to Agatha and that the couple were overwhelmed with excitement as they had not met in “an extremely long time.”

For their crimes, Skea and Agatha could have been jailed for up to six months and also fined up to $ 10,000 per charge.
