The Covid-19 pandemic has hit migrant workers hard in Singapore, and safe distancing measures ending their annual Deepavali celebrations have only cooled their spirits further.
Hoping to boost their morale and cheer them up, the Tuas View Square dormitory operator prepared a sweet surprise for the workers who reside there.
Stomper Janet, who was appointed by her boss Joey to look after the well-being of the workers, shared how the dormitory has been decorated in Tuas View Square in lieu of the Deepavali celebration next weekend.
Janet was touched by her employer’s gesture when she saw the decorations on Thursday (November 5) and shared photos with Stomp.
The photos show the hallways adorned with festive colored curtains, and fairy lights can be seen hanging over the bedroom entrance.
“Morale in the bedroom has been extremely low due to Covid-19 and was especially low during the breaker period,” shared Janet.
“Sometimes the workers cried because this period is hard for them.
“So since my boss runs the dorm, she decided to arrange for Deepavali decorations to be put up to improve everyone’s mood.
“It was a surprise for the workers. They returned to the bedroom after a hard day’s work and were surprised to see the whole place decorated like a grand palace.
“They were all smiling! Immediately after settling in and showering, the workers began taking photos and videos of the place.
“Some of them even video-called their family to show them the decorations.
“It was a moving scene and it made me very happy.”
Janet also shared that Muniasami, her housekeeper who is in charge of keeping the bedroom clean, was excited to see that the place was spruced up for Deepavali.

“Usually my boss will reserve a restaurant for the workers so they can celebrate Deepavali,” Janet added.
“But because of Covid-19 this year, she couldn’t do that. So she came up with the plan to decorate the place and order restaurant food in the bedroom so they could have a mini Deepavali celebration.
“The workers were so touched by my boss’s actions. I mean, they definitely miss home, but it makes them feel a little bit happier.”
