When the internet learned of an elderly blind man who was wandering around at night to earn a living selling cookies, many well-meaning netizens were quick to offer their help.

Yet for the elderly who had been self-sufficient for the past 30 years just by selling cookies, the sudden outpouring of help left him feeling like a fish out of water.

Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao, the 71-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Lim, thanked netizens for their kindness, but expressed that he was not used to having everyone’s attention on him and that he preferred to be self-sufficient.

According to him, the customers who bought him were already a great help, and he really appreciated the cases where strangers asked for a ride to take him home.

“I’m used to this quiet. With this overnight worry, and the public and charity workers coming to my door to ask about me, I actually feel quite concerned,” he shared.

“After I got fired, I didn’t want to depend on anyone, so I started selling cookies. More than 30 years have passed since then.”

Now, you wish you could continue your days selling cookies in peace. He added that since he used to reside in Redhill, many of the residents he knew would support him.

However, selling cookies on the road was no easy feat. While he was able to sell 50 packages on better days, other times he would be ignored. Someone had even called the police on him last Tuesday (December 1) to ask him to stay away from the premise.

Lim had made headlines for the first time after a netizen spotted him along Redhill after 11 p.m. The netizen had sent Lim home before posting a message asking others to support him if they encountered the old man. .

A charity group dedicated to door-to-door food distribution later approached Lim at his door, where they offered to help him with meals.

Although he declined his offer, he ultimately accepted, as he was still recovering from an injury he sustained a couple of months ago, which left him hospitalized for five weeks with iron implants in his hips.

The charity added that he currently lives off his retirement account savings, as well as the Silver Support Scheme, which supplements the income of retired seniors.

She also receives additional support from another group of volunteers, who have been helping to clean her house for the past three years, while a Christian group delivers cakes every week.
