In one of the toughest sanctions to date, a shelter was ordered to suspend operations for 30 days for failing to comply with Covid-19 safe management measures.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) ordered Hawaii Hostel on Bencoolen Street to suspend operations from October 11 to November 9 after investigations revealed that it had allowed more than 260 guests to check-in for leisure purposes since 17 of September.
Hostel operators are reminded that leisure reservations are not allowed. They must also comply with all safe management measures to safeguard the health and well-being of our people and prevent new clusters from forming, STB said.
STB said yesterday that its officers also found that Hawaii Hostel had previously made false statements to safe distance ambassadors, claiming that its clients were long-term guests rather than guests on leisure reservations.
Nor had he recorded the reason for his guests’ stay.
The hostel cannot accept new reservations or accept registrations during suspension.
Since shelters are closed neighborhoods where people outside the family are likely to come into close contact with each other in closed spaces and for prolonged periods, there is a high risk of virus transmission associated with the physical environment.
STB’s regular compliance checks also found two establishments conducting business despite not being allowed to do so. On October 9, STB officers discovered that 72 Mad Monk, a bar in the Concorde Mall, was open despite not having a valid grocery store license. It also allows customers to play pool and drink alcohol after 10:30 PM.
On October 10, STB officers conducted checks on Kris Bollywood at Concorde Hotel and found two people consuming alcohol after 10:30 p.m. Both businesses are under investigation.
Under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act of 2020, first-time offenders can be fined up to $ 10,000. Subsequent violations can be fined up to $ 20,000.
Between October 6 and 14, STB issued fines ranging from $ 300 to $ 1,000 to 16 people for not wearing a mask. Since the beginning of the second phase, controls have been intensified in tourist establishments and venues.
This month, five food and beverage establishments were also fined for violating safe management measures.
Four of them – Bagus Sio Good at # 01-07A Far East Plaza, Chuan Yang Ji Mutton Soup Steamboat at 211 South Bridge Road, The Hot Gathering at 32 Upper Cross Street, and Komala’s Restaurant at 330 Serangoon Road – had failed to guarantee safety. 1 m distance between seated clients.
