Former Liverpool striker John Barnes has insisted that midfielder Thiago Alcantara must work to gain playing time when he is back in shape.
Thiago suffered a knee injury in October’s 2-2 draw with Everton and has not played since.
But with several other Reds stars, including Virgil van Dijk and Jordan henderson Faced with fitness problems, there is hope that the arrival of the Spaniard can alleviate pessimism.
Indeed, an expert has suggested that Thiago will play an “important role” when he returns to the field.
However, according to Barnes, the 29-year-old will not make the Liverpool squad amid the injury crisis.
“When you play regularly, that’s when you can solidify your position within the team,” Barnes said. “But due to injuries, Thiago hasn’t been able to do that and only played a handful of games.
“He will be in contention to play, depending on the game. Yes Liverpool They face rivals who defend in numbers and defend in depth, so Thiago is the man who can create something out of nothing.
“He’s not necessarily one of the first names in midfield three even before he got injured.”
Barnes feels the same way as forward Diogo Jota, who has scored seven goals in 11 games since his arrival. In addition, the Portuguese displaced Roberto Firmino on the side against Manchester City.
Jota must also work for the role
“It is the same with Diogo Jota, both players are giving Liverpool options and have the same quality as the other players but there is no certainty to start each week,” added Barnes.
“Jota has scored so many goals since he came in, and he’s not a starter all the time. It is not about playing well, it is about the balance of the team, who congratulates whom ”.
Although Thiago will likely remain on the sidelines for now, the Reds boss Jurgen Klopp you face potential selection headaches elsewhere. Captain Henderson may miss Sunday’s big clash with Leicester, with Mohamed Salah definitely out.
But it’s in defense where Klopp could shuffle his pack the most. With Joe Gomez and Van Dijk out, and concerns about Fabinho, he could play a fringe player alongside Joel Matip.
If that’s the case, Ian Wright feels Foxes forward Jamie Vardy will seek to expose the hosts’ weakness.
